POSTMASTERS' PROVISIONALS
(1845 to 1847)
Congress established postal rates effective July 1, 1845. The first Postmaster Provisional stamps
were issued in New York in July 1845, and were soon followed by other Postmasters. They were
used until superseded by the Federal Government stamps were issued, starting July 1, 1847.
